IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is an assisted reproduction treatment in which eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in the laboratory. The embryos are monitored as they develop, and the healthiest one is placed in the womb to achieve pregnancy.

ICSI stands for intracytoplasmic sperm injection. It is an assisted reproduction technique in which a single sperm is selected and injected into the egg with a fine needle, using an instrument called a micromanipulator. Since its introduction, ICSI has transformed the treatment of male infertility.

• How long does an IVF/ICSI cycle take?

  A cycle usually takes about four to six weeks from the start of stimulation to embryo transfer. The pregnancy test follows roughly two weeks after transfer. Your doctor will give you a timeline for your case.The full form of ICSI is Intracytoplasmic sperm injection. This is a technique of assisted reproduction where a single sperm is selected and inserted into the egg of the female with the help of a very sophisticated instrument called a micromanipulator. After the invention of ICSI, the approach to treating male infertility has improved to a greater extent, resulting in excellent results.

• Is IVF/ICSI painful?

  Most patients describe mild discomfort from injections and monitoring. Egg collection is done under sedation, so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. Embryo transfer is usually quick and comfortable.

• Does IVF/ICSI guarantee pregnancy?

  No. IVF can help many couples, but results depend on age, diagnosis and other factors. Some patients need more than one cycle. We'll always be open with you about your chances.

• What is the difference between IVF and ICSI?

  In IVF, eggs and sperm are brought together in a laboratory dish, allowing fertilisation to occur naturally. Your doctor may recommend IVF for conditions such as blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, endometriosis, reduced ovarian reserve, ovulation problems, male-factor infertility, unexplained infertility, or when previous treatments such as IUI have not been successful. In ICSI, a single selected sperm is injected directly into the egg to assist fertilisation. ICSI may be recommended in cases of low sperm count, reduced sperm movement or abnormal sperm shape, surgically retrieved sperm, frozen sperm samples, or when a previous IVF cycle resulted in low fertilisation. After fertilisation, the remaining steps of the IVF and ICSI process are generally the same.

• When should I see a specialist?

  Generally after 12 months of trying without success, or after 6 months if the woman is over 35. Book sooner if you have irregular cycles, endometriosis, or a known male-factor issue.
