Intrauterine insemination (IUI) places prepared sperm inside the uterus around ovulation to help fertilisation happen naturally.
IUI (intrauterine insemination) is a fertility treatment in which a sperm sample is washed and concentrated in the laboratory, then placed inside the uterus with a thin, soft catheter at the time of ovulation. This shortens the sperm's journey to the egg and helps fertilisation happen naturally.
IUI may suit couples with mild male-factor infertility, unexplained infertility, cervical mucus problems, or ovulation disorders such as PCOS, provided the fallopian tubes are open.
You may take mild ovulation-stimulating medication, and we monitor your follicles by ultrasound. On the right day, the prepared sample is placed in the uterus. You can usually resume normal activities soon after, and take a pregnancy test about two weeks later.
IUI places prepared sperm in the uterus and fertilisation happens inside the body. IVF fertilises the eggs in the laboratory and transfers an embryo. IUI is simpler and often tried first. IVF is usually chosen when tubes are blocked, ovarian reserve is low or IUI hasn't worked.
